Breathing

I’ve been busy, busy with little people and haven’t blogged in awhile.  Now I’m back!

So, Nathan has been sick the last few days.  It seemed to start with a cold or allergies…we never were exactly sure.  On Thursday, he was sent home from school early with coughing, goopy nose, etc.  When he got home he was quite asthmatic and needed his inhaler.  From there it went from bad to worse.  We puffed and puffed and nebulized him all afternoon/evening and all through the night.  We had gotten behind the curve and just couldn’t catch back up.  You end up “chasing” the asthma and not being able to control it.

So, on Friday morning, off we went to the doctor.  We saw a lady we hadn’t seen before and she gave us meds on top of meds.  More nebulizer treatments, allergy meds and steroids to help.  We finally got ahead of the asthma and when he left the doctor’s office, I felt like I could breathe again!

The doctor told me (at the end of the appointment) that she was really worried about Nathan when he first got there.  He acted fine but was really struggling to get oxygen and move air well.  We have heard that once before from an ER doctor.  Just goes to show how remarkable Nathan is.  He still acts active and full of life, even when he is struggling.

The timing of this whole thing reminded me of a time up in Bellingham, in the waiting room of the NICU.  Nathan had recently been transferred up there and we had to wait in the lobby for shift changes.  There was a man there waiting with his 5-6 year old.  The little boy was sleeping and I remember wondering if I’d ever be able to let my child sleep without worrying if they were breathing!  Something we take for granted now but how many times did I put my finger up to his nose, to make sure I could feel his breath?!?

This time of year is tough for me…full of memories.  We  head into a season of birthdays in our house,  but also tucked away in my heart, is a time of remembering anniversaries too.  Seven years ago we began walking through the long and incredibly difficult journey of losing babies, early births, hospital stays, emergencies..scary, scary times.  We have come so far.  God is SO good!

My goal today is to enjoy the day.   Take a deep breath.  Enjoy it!  It doesn’t always come easily!
