So today was a day of messes. All day long. Everywhere!
It started out like a busy Monday morning with a dentist visit for one, school drop off for another, and then a trip to Snohomish for Speech Therapy. My Dad took Nathan down for speech and once I picked up Caleb from school, I was here with the Little Boys. We played downstairs and lined up cars and cleaned out tubs, etc. Then it was time to put Zachary down for a nap. I left Caleb downstairs for maybe 5 minutes while I put Z down. He is usually very responsible and will happily play on his own, so it seemed like no big deal.
Well, soon after, Nathan came home and was all excited about his time at speech and was hungry so I got busy making him a late lunch and he went downstairs to play for a few minutes before he ate. All was fine until he came back into the kitchen. He never said a word but I noticed some ‘interesting’ shoe prints on the floor of the kitchen…yep, poop. I whisked his shoes off and assumed he’d stepped in dog poop on his way in the house. If only I had been so lucky. He told me to come back downstairs, which if you have boys is never a good thing. (Come see! always means something bad has happened or is about to happen!)
I went downstairs and he showed me there was poop on the floor. Like a huge MOUND of poop. And not only that, but some on the train table, the cars mat and the floor all the way up to the kitchen. Because what person when they notice that they’ve stepped in poo doesn’t wipe said poo on the table nearby and the rug next to the table? Are you envisioning this yet? Trust me, it gets better!
So, we brought all the supplies back downstairs and cleaned up what I thought was all of the mess. Shoes washed. Carpet in the washer. Table washed. Floors cleaned (thank you Norwex!). Lots of hand washing. Check. All set. I go back to the kitchen to check on Nathan’s sandwich and he comes up with cars in his hand, all covered with…wait, can you guess? POOP!
Apparently Caleb had not only pooped on the floor but somehow had gotten some in with his huge tub of cars. Because again, what 4 year old doesn’t look at a pile of poop and think, “Hmmm, I bet my cars would run well in that stuff!” Caleb was already in his room for a time out when we found the cars. I made him come back down and throw out the cars that were infected, I mean affected. At $1 or so each, I was not about to wash the poop out of all the wheels, windows etc! In tears Caleb said goodbye to some of his cars and the other ones are now living in the garage.
Why? Can anyone tell me why it’s fun to poop in the house? I knew signing up to be a parent would be challenging and messy and I expected the poopy diapers and the occasional poopy person, but in the house? I just don’t get it. (And the other day Caleb was distracted in the bathroom and when I went in, he had peed everywhere! When I asked him about it, he just said, “My penis wasn’t looking where it was going!” How hard is it to hit the toilet!!)
Anyway, the day went on and we forgot all about the poo. Cars are still locked away. Caleb and I had a nice chat about what happened and will not happen again…ever! Nathan and I talked about maybe not stepping in poop or rubbing it off on things, maybe taking a shoe off next time??
And, that wasn’t the only mess for the day. There was the three wet muddy boys coming in from playing outside. The bath mat which mysteriously found it’s way into the bath with Nathan and Zachary. The leaking freezer. The water Caleb spilled all over his and Nathan’s beds while he was in time out. The cereal bowl, Zachary grabbed off the table and dumped all over the floor and the whole roll of paper towels Nathan had strewn across the floor to clean up said cereal mess. It was just a day!
So now they are all in bed, it’s only 630 and they’ll probably be up at the crack of dawn, but I couldn’t handle any more messes!! Plus, if they are asleep within 5 minutes of going to bed, I assume they are wiped out little people! Thank God that tomorrow is a new day full of promise and the possibility of no poop!
Oh my! Poop is the worst. For some reason we have poop-tastrifies at the public library. More times than I’d like to say my 2 year old has looked at me and said “poop”; which is short for “there is poop on the chair, carpet and my clothes and you are going to have to do the walk of shame out of the library with me wearing only a diaper on after you clean everything up”. Ha!
I will remember this story whenever I THINK that I am having a bad day!
