Are you hoping to start a tutoring business? The opportunity came to me years ago when I had left the classroom after 9 years to stay home with my own kiddos. It has been the most fun thing I’ve done!
I’ve always said that tutoring is the “best parts” of teaching. You get to work with one student or a very small group of students and you get to tailor your plan to meet their specific needs. I love getting to work with kids on exactly what they need help with. I was born to teach and knew I wanted to teach from the age of 3, so it’s been a wonderful outlet for me to use my teaching abilities outside of the traditional classroom.
Here are a few things I use and tips I’ve found along the way:
First of all, I offer my initial evaluation free of charge. I think this is a great time for me to meet the student and the family, make sure we click and can work well together, and I get to assess where the student is at and where any gaps may be. This is just an idea I had when I first started and I have continued to offer it. I have never had an initial meeting that didn’t turn into a continued tutoring experience, but I like to provide this service as we get to know one another a little bit. It gives a way out for either party, if things just don’t click.
Secondly, I like to have my families sign a contract of sorts. I lay out my guidelines and go over it with them at that first session. That way there are no surprises and all are in agreement. I get their basic info, we discuss cancellation policy and payment options and expectations. Give these things some thought so you know what your expectations are and be prepared to communicate them clearly. I always think it’s better to be up front so everyone is on the same page. I don’t ask for payment until the end of the month but you may prefer pre payment before your sessions. Figure out what will work for you and let the families know.
Third, talk to the family before you even meet the student. Ask what their goals would be for tutoring. Ask what challenges the student may have. Ask what motivates them and what they like. I jot all this down in a lined notebook so I can reference it as needed. This helps me pull together what assessments I want to do as I head into that initial meeting.
Fourth, have in mind a set of times that will work for you. I was so excited to start tutoring in the beginning that I was willing to do it anytime. It made for some later nights than I’d like and earlier mornings and took me away from my family more than I had wanted. I now have set times I offer tutoring sessions and if that doesn’t work for a family, I try to connect them with someone else who may be able to help. Keep your family time preserved.
Finally, get the word out there that you are offering tutoring services. I have had many clients come word of mouth, but I also do post on a local Mama’s Support group on Fb. I know some schools will also look for after school tutors so it might be worth reaching out to your local schools. Post it on insta or on your fb page. There are always people looking for tutors, you just need to get the word out there.
Tutoring truly is the best and so much fun. You get to be the child’s cheerleader and encourager to help them learn and succeed. Make it as fun as possible and build up those brains!
